Lies, First Person by Gail Hareven, tells the story of Elinor, who is jolted out of her comfortable life in Jerusalem by the reappearance of her Uncle Aaron Gotthilf. Decades earlier, Uncle Aaron created an international uproar with the publication of Hitler, First Person, a so-called “autobiography”, fictionalizing and humanizing Adolf Hitler. His return forces Elinor to confront her family’s past, her relationship with her sister Elisheva, and her own capacity for violence.
