BJ Teen Letter Writing Project

Thursday, July 23, 2020 @ 5:00 PM–6:00 PM

  • iCalendar

  • Outlook Live

What are we doing?

This summer we will be writing letters to the elders of The New Jewish Home.  If you’d like to participate, contact Julia Rothman below and we will send you the names of residents you can write to. Work by yourself or with your fellow teen community over zoom, and know that anything you write will be wonderful. Thank you in advance for your time. Your recipients will be truly grateful.

How to Write a Letter:

  • Be creative!  Include a poem or a picture.  Decorate your letter
  • Spread positivity!  Be kind and thoughtful.
  • Avoid talking about religion or personal views.
  • Hand-write your letter in a large font.  Avoid script, as it is hard for older readers to comprehend.
  • Do not include the date just in case it takes a while to get there!
  • Make it personal!  Include your first name and their first name.  Make it interesting, write an anecdote or tell them about yourself.
  • Remember, they will not be responding to you so refrain from asking questions.
  • Do not say “get well soon” as they may not be sick!
  • Do not use glitter or buttons as they may fall off or be messy.  Instead, use paint, stickers, feathers, markers, etc.

Things to Include in a Letter:

  • My name is…
  • I’m (#) years old…
  • I go to (school)…
  • Some of my hobbies are…
  • Something inspiring:
  • I hope you are having a nice day
  • I wanted to let you know that I am thinking about you.
  • Find joy in the ordinary
  • Include a drawing and/or a poem

Examples:

Let these examples serve as inspiration for your letters.  Though they were written by children, they are perfect letters to send!

Email Julia Rothman if you plan to participate
