Book Chat with Jennifer Hirsch and David Lieberman

Join us as David Lieberman, known to many BJ families as a b’nai mitzvah tutor and leader of the Moving Traditions program, interviews Jennifer Hirsch about her recently published book, Sexual Citizens. Participants will also have a chance to ask Jennifer questions about the topic and her research. Please note that this topic contains themes of sexual violence and assault and may not be appropriate for all participants.

In 2017 the Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT)—a research initiative begun at Columbia in 2015—found that, among undergraduates surveyed at Columbia and Barnard, one in three women had experienced sexual assault by the end of their senior year. In Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power and Assault on Campus, Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan, leaders of SHIFT’s ethnographic team, draw on their research to present a new, scientifically-rigorous perspective on the problem of campus sexual assault. The authors frame the issue as a public health problem, pointing to the social roots of sexual assault and giving readers the powerful concepts of sexual projects, sexual citizenship, and sexual geographies as tools for understanding, and thinking about how we can all prevent, campus sexual assault.

Jennifer Hirsch is a Professor and Deputy Chair for Doctoral Studies in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health. She is Co-Director at the Columbia Population Research Center.

This is part of our Community Offerings series of events led by community members. We hope you will join us for one or all of them!
