Alice Shalvi’s spellbinding memoir, Never a Native, which won a National Jewish Book Award in 2019, is both deeply personal and sweepingly political. Born in Germany in 1926, Shalvi has been a resident of Israel for over seventy years and a pioneer in advancing the status of women in Israel (as co-founder of the Israel Women’s Network) and in girls’ education (as founder of the Pelech School, a progressive religious high school in Jerusalem). Although she describes herself as “never a native” and always an outsider, she is a force for good in Israel, fighting for new and more equitable social realities.
